Iran Voices Skepticism on U.S.-Israel Ceasefire
(MENAFN) Iran expressed deep skepticism on Sunday regarding the durability of a ceasefire brokered by the United States between Israel and Tehran, warning that it stands fully prepared to retaliate against any renewed aggression.
“Since we are completely doubtful about the enemy honoring its commitments, including the ceasefire, we are prepared to give it a tough response in case of recurrence of an act of aggression," stated Iran’s Chief of Staff Maj. Gen. Abdolrahim Mousavi during a phone conversation with Saudi Defense Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman.
Mousavi accused the US and Israel of launching attacks on Iranian territory while Iran was participating in indirect nuclear discussions with Washington.
“The two regimes have shown that they do not adhere to any international rules and norms,” he added.
“We did not initiate war, but we responded with all our power to the aggressor,” Mousavi said.
The contact between the two defense officials was also reported by media, which said the conversation covered “bilateral relations in the defense field” and recent regional developments.
Tensions spiked on June 13 when Israel initiated a series of airstrikes targeting Iranian military, nuclear, and civilian infrastructure. According to Iran’s Health Ministry, the strikes resulted in at least 606 deaths and 5,332 injuries.
In a parallel move, the United States struck three of Iran’s nuclear facilities—located in Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan—further escalating hostilities.
Tehran responded with missile and drone barrages against Israeli targets, leading to at least 29 fatalities and over 3,400 injuries, according to data from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
Hostilities paused on June 24 under a ceasefire initiative sponsored by the United States. However, Iran’s top military leadership remains highly doubtful of its longevity.
