Macron, Putin discuss Iran’s nuclear program on phone

(MENAFN) French President Emmanuel Macron and Russian President Vladimir Putin held their first phone conversation since 2022 on Tuesday, focusing on Iran’s nuclear program and the ongoing situation in Ukraine.

Regarding Iran, Macron highlighted that as permanent members of the UN Security Council, both France and Russia bear responsibilities under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), according to a statement from the Elysee Palace.

He stressed the urgent need for Iran to fulfill its commitments and fully cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to allow inspectors to resume their work promptly.

Macron also reaffirmed France’s dedication to pursuing a diplomatic approach aimed at a lasting and strict resolution concerning Iran’s nuclear and missile programs, along with its regional role.

The two leaders agreed to coordinate their efforts and continue discussions on the issue, the Elysee Palace added.

A Kremlin statement from the call emphasized the importance of respecting Iran’s legitimate right to develop peaceful nuclear energy while maintaining its obligations under the NPT, including ongoing cooperation with the IAEA.

On the matter of Ukraine, Macron reiterated France’s firm support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He called for an immediate ceasefire and the start of negotiations between Ukraine and Russia to reach a stable and enduring resolution to the conflict.
