U.S. Lawmakers Warn Against Restricting Iran Military Action
In a joint statement, Josh Gottheimer and Mike Lawler argued that the legislation would weaken U.S. strategic flexibility at a critical time.
"So long as ‘Death to America’ remains the rallying cry of the Iranian regime, Iran will remain a persistent and serious threat to our men and women in uniform, our allies, and global stability," said Josh Gottheimer and Mike Lawler.
The pair said they oppose the Massie-Khanna War Powers Resolution, which seeks to bar the use of military force against Iran without prior approval from Congress.
The proposal was introduced by Representatives Thomas Massie and Ro Khanna and would prohibit military action absent explicit congressional authorization.
While backing congressional involvement, Gottheimer and Lawler underscored the importance of preserving executive responsiveness in volatile security conditions. They described oversight and debate as "absolutely vital."
"However, this resolution would restrict the flexibility needed to respond to real and evolving threats and risks signaling weakness at a dangerous moment," they added.
The lawmakers further emphasized that any prospective military operations should adhere to existing statutory requirements, including the War Powers Act, and that Congress must be kept informed.
"It is also essential that the appropriate committees are fully and promptly briefed. Congress must not limit our ability to protect Americans and our allies," they added.
