China’s Top Chipmaker Allegedly Supplies Iran’s Military
The officials stated that SMIC, which has faced US sanctions for alleged connections to the Chinese military, started sending these tools to Iran almost a year ago. They added that they have "no reason to believe that any of this has stopped." According to the officials, the equipment could be applied to any electronics requiring chips.
The collaboration "almost certainly included technical training on SMIC's semiconductor technology," reported the Economic Times.
Speaking under anonymity to discuss previously classified US government information, the officials did not clarify whether the equipment originated from the United States.
Requests for comment from SMIC and the Chinese Embassy in Washington were not answered. Meanwhile, the Chinese authorities maintain that their dealings with Iran are normal commercial trade.
SMIC, which was placed on a US trade blacklist in 2020 restricting its access to American exports, has repeatedly denied any connections to China’s military-industrial complex.
