Lavrov Says Russia Ready to Support Iran Nuclear Talks

(MENAFN) Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated on Monday that Moscow has not received any formal American proposals concerning a reported new arrangement for Iran’s nuclear program. However, he reaffirmed that Russia remains willing to assist in encouraging a negotiated compromise between Washington and Tehran, provided both parties express interest.

During a press briefing in Moscow, Lavrov noted that he had come across media accounts suggesting that communication between the United States and Iran may be occurring via Pakistani intermediaries or other indirect channels. He added uncertainty about these claims.

"I cannot confirm the accuracy of this information. We have not seen any proposals and are not trying to insert ourselves into this negotiation process. We wish this process success,” Lavrov said.

He further emphasized that Russian President Vladimir Putin has consistently conveyed to American, Israeli, and Iranian officials that Moscow is prepared to take on “a constructive role” if both sides request its involvement.

Lavrov also maintained that Russia was instrumental in securing the 2015 agreement on Iran’s nuclear program, highlighting its contribution in addressing challenges related to enriched uranium stockpiles.

“We are ready to do this now as well,” he said. “Especially since the nuclear aspect of the settlement, judging by reports and the information we receive, is once again coming to the forefront.”

He also reiterated Moscow’s stance that Iran, as a member of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), is entitled to enrich uranium for peaceful energy use, as long as it remains under the oversight of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
