Trump Rules Out Immediate Military Action Against Iran
Asked by reporters outside the White House whether US forces could strike Iran as early as Sunday, Trump responded, "Would I tell you that? But the answer is no. There will not be a strike," as he left for a campaign rally in Michigan.
He also pointed to differences in the intelligence available to Washington, saying, "We have two very different sets of intelligence reports," and describing the information as "very advanced."
Trump maintained that the United States was doing "well with Iran," despite a separate report citing an unnamed US official as saying the president was ready to "shift gears on Iran." The official reportedly added that military action no longer seemed to be "a question of if, but of when."
The comments came after Trump issued a stark choice concerning Tehran earlier Sunday, raising the prospect of either reaching a diplomatic agreement or pursuing overwhelming military action against the country.
"Do I make a deal with them, or do I finish them off? That's the only question," Trump told Fox News, presenting diplomacy and an escalation of military operations as the two possible paths forward.
